The New York Real Estate Pre-Licensing Course fulfills the educational requirements of getting your New York real estate license. This course is required to get your New York real estate license because it provides the foundational knowledge you’ll need to succeed in the real estate industry.

How many hours is the New York real estate course?

The New York real estate license course is 77 hours total, as mandated by New York State law. Each of the topics covered varies in length. Read on to learn more about the course curriculum and how long each individual chapter is.

What are the requirements to complete the New York Real Estate Pre-Licensing Course?

To qualify to take the New York Real Estate Pre-Licensing Course, you will need to meet the following requirements:

  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Have a current NYS photo driver’s license or non-driver ID card.
  • Have no prior felony or sex offense convictions.

Who is required to take the New York Real Estate Pre-Licensing Course?

Any person interested in getting their New York real estate license must complete the New York real estate pre-licensing course. However, there are a few exceptions. If you meet any of the following requirements, you may not need to complete the 77 hours of pre-licensing education:

  • If you have completed the 45-hour salesperson qualifying course prior to July 1, 2008, you may complete the 30-hour remedial course in order to qualify for licensure.
  • If you hold a Bachelor’s degree with a major or concentration in real estate.
  • If you completed a substantially similar real estate pre-license course in another state.
INSIDER ADVICE: The New York Department of State has the authority to waive the 77-hour pre-licensing requirement in some cases. If you meet any of the above conditions and think you may not need to complete the 77-hour pre-licensing course, check with the New York Department of State to be sure.

What To Expect In The NY 77-Hour Real Estate Pre-Licensing Course

To get your New York real estate license, you will need to successfully complete 77 hours of real estate pre-licensing education. Here a few things to expect while completing the course:

  • Course Timers: The New York Department of State requires that students complete 77 hours of real estate pre-licensing education. There will be timers for each section of the course and the timers must hit 0:00 before you can advance in the course.
  • Quizzes: Each lesson of the course will conclude with a Key Terms Review Quiz and Chapter Review quiz to test your knowledge of what you’ve learned. You will need to pass these quizzes with a score of 70% or higher to move on to the next section of the course. 
  • School Final Exam: Once you’ve completed all of the coursework, you’ll have to pass a final proctored course exam with a minimum score of 70%. The School Final Exam will prepare you for the New York State Exam.
